Richard is a scientist by background (Cambridge and Yale) with his immediate postgraduate years spent working with Ralph Nader's Public Interest Research Group in Washington DC.

From 1973 he then spent 27 years with former chemicals major ICI in various international business management and leadership roles, latterly implementing a major manufacturing investment in Japan and then serving as ICI's Global Group VP IT.  The following decade were spent as non-executive chair and director of a number of young tech ventures, serving on the board of the UK trade association Intellect (now TechUK) and (between 2008 and 2014) writing a regular column for IDG’s CIO Magazine: while also chairing the trustees of several arts organisations.

He now works as a board-level strategic analyst, assurer & advisor in the management, exploitation & sourcing of information & communications technologies with a particular focus on the transformation of business models and enterprise, public sector and vendor operations through the agency of virtualisation & the Cloud.

In addition to his work with CIF and his own strategic advisory practice he is an Executive Advisor at Bloor, and now writes a monthly column for Icon Business Media. In the arts world he is currently a Trustee of the Dartington International Summer (Music) School & Festival Foundation in Devon.
